South Carolina could own this name, not constantly have to explain that you're not talking about the Real Carolina (UNC) or University of Southern California. Both of those schools have a much richer history. This is similar to what UNCC did for there sports teams, they are now Charlotte.
If you go out of the state of South Carolina and you talk about Carolina or USC no one will think of University of South Carolina, even with the popularity of the SEC. I know plenty of South Carolina grads/fans and I just want their school to have it own identity. Who is with me?
