Let get behind the idea of a Universal EMR/ EHR in the United States. I do not think this is a controversial idea, and seems logical: any physician can access records for a patient from any ER, hospital or specialist, so there is NO duplication of effort, no medicine errors, no over-prescribing, and a clear picture of patient health. This is NOT a new idea: This is the whole purpose of the EMR to begin with. The technology exists. It can be made safe and secure and HIPAA compliant. The benefit to our patients will be immense: the downside will be to the makers of the multiple competing and very expensive EMR's. The cost burden could be paid for via Medicare compensation or another similar system. The US Government has mandated EMR, let them supply it also!
