The 538 electors chosen to represent our electoral votes get to vote for whoever they want. They can completely disregard the millions of voters who cast their ballots on Election Day.
Why do we need electors? Can’t we just automatically allocate the electoral votes based on the Election Day results? I know the election outcome has never been changed by rogue electors, but just because something has never happened doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prevent it from happening in the future.
How can one person be able to tell the millions of voters in his or her state “Sorry I don’t care who you want to be president, I’m going to do my own thing”? We need to pass a federal law that either eliminates the electors or legally forces them to follow the will of the voters.
