The United States has a professional strategic reserve in our Army and Air National Guards. Host to a variety of units ranging from homeland response forces, to Military Police units, to aviation units, to Air Guard units that specialize in surveillance, to a broad array of military intelligence specialties - our National Guard is perhaps best suited to peacefully and professionally maintain the security of our borders to prevent illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and other homeland security threats. While the National Guard is already helping with this mission, we request that the Guard be given full oversight of and responsibility for it. If our Guard units can secure hard-won gains in the warfight, they can secure our borders here at home.
