LIFE OR DEATH: STOP ALLOWING DISCRIMINATION IN THERAPY SERVICES

Created by R.C. on May 29, 2016

Tennessee's governor recently signed HB 1840/SB 1556 into law. This law, in essence, allows therapists to discriminate against clients based on factors such as religious beliefs or sexual orientation. For example, under this law, a Christian therapist could refuse services to someone because they identify as LGBTQ or an Buddhist therapist could refuse service to someone who is Christian. It could even be broadened to say that a therapist against war could refuse to treat a veteran with PTSD. While the law does require that a therapist not refuse service to someone in crisis and also requires referrals to places that can help, the law only serves as an excuse for hatred and exclusion and further adds an inconvenience to citizens who actually need help with their mental health.
