In 2008 I wrote a letter to my congressman, Jerry McNerney, asking him to take up the cause of allowing gays to donate blood. I received of very nice reply basically telling me that the FDA is monitoring the scientific data, blah, blah, blah.
Here are the facts: 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year, Someone needs blood every two seconds, About 1 in 7 people entering a Hospital need blood, Much of today's medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from healthy donors, Only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood-less than ten percent do. If only ONE more percent of all Americans would give blood, blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future.
Millions of gay Americans are waiting to donate blood if given the chance.
