I was denied a security clearance for the US Armed services as an officer candidate due to delinquent student loan debt.
Federal regs state that $10K+ in charged off accounts immediately disqualifies a person from entering OCS. My situation was not a matter of recklessness, it was due to financial hardship in a tough job market. My loan company did not grant extensions under any circumstances and forced me into default with my private student loan, which was acquired to pay for tuition and flight training. Once my situation improved I have been making payments on-time, every month.
I would like the President to consider issuing an Executive Order to amend the rule for individuals like me who could not avoid debt due to tough circumstances, so that we may serve as military officers.
