In light of the most recent tragedy, we as Americans are ready to pass serious firearm legislation. The ban on assault rifles needs to be reintroduced in Congress, then signed by The President. There is no justification for the average citizen to own these types of weapons.
Secondly pass legislation that will set an amount of ammunition that is allowed to be purchased at a time, unless on a range and being observed.
Thirdly close the loophole that gunshows create and create better licensing enforcement.
Lastly a background check that includes any mental health related knowledge and a waiting period that extends for a couple weeks while a thorough check is being conducted. This will also include a national mental health database that can be accessed by any law enforcement department.
