Today, the average 1 hour block of television will constitute 43 minutes of programming, with 17 minutes of commercials, which works out to about 28% of the time block is dedicated to commercials. On some stations, this number is even higher. For example, many cable stations such as VH1 or Spike regularly allow show that should run for 60 minutes to run for 70-72 minutes instead, with the extra time being the result of commercials. This does not even account for the parts of the program that are edited out to make room for more commercials. While Americans understand the need for commercials, sometimes there are so many commercials that it distracts from the viewing experience. The administration should limit commercials to 20% of the original length of the program or time block it is in.
