Overuse of fertilizer and pesticides has caused major water pollution problems in most parts of the country. From the 5,000 square mile dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, to the 2 day shutdown of water use in Toledo, to the massive decline in bee population linked to neonicotinoid insecticides, we have a massive problem. Incentivizing the limitation or elimination of the use of these chemicals can have a profound beneficial effect to every person in the country. Cleaner water, more abundant aquatic resources and better agricultural practices, this is an issue that needs to be addressed quickly and directly. All the ecosystems affected can, and will, bounce back on their own but intervention is needed before they have that chance.
