limit the amount of time private companies & law enforcement may store personal data gathered through license plate scan

Created by M.T. on July 13, 2015

Many law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S. have begun utilizing private sector companies to compile data about American citizens, whether they were suspected of a crime or not, by using license plate scanners, often times equipped with GPS, that are mounted on local law enforcement patrol cars and planted throughout many U.S. cities. The data gathered during these scans gets stored indefinitely. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in 2012 that lengthy GPS tracking constitutes a Fourth Amendment search and may require a warrant. This ruling must be upheld in order to protect American citizens basic right to privacy. The Federal government needs to set clear legal limits regarding the amount of time personal data, obtained via license plate scanners, may be kept on record.
