Currently, if an employer labels an employee as exempt they are not required to pay those employees any overtime wages. Employers are taking advantage of this. Employees are working greater numbers of hours so employers don't have to hire more workers. They are all requiring employees to "do more with less." If those employers had to pay overtime to the employees after 45 hours a week, they would decide to hire more workers and put more people back to work. Additionally, this would end the practice of employers forcing employees to work long hours for no extra pay. Employees will take this abuse because they are afraid of losing their job, but we need to speak up and tell employers to hire enough workers to get the job done instead of overworking those they have for free.
