The Davis Bacon Act requires the government to issue contracts for any construction project over $2,000. The Act was amended in 1936 reducing the contracting threshold from $5,000 to $2,000 where it has been ever since. $2,000 in 1936 would be $34,000 today. The original $5,000 would be $85,000. Issuing contracts adds considerable time and paperwork. It also withholds work from small business who don't know how to navigate and register with the government contracting programs. Congress should immediately amend the Davis-Bacon Act to reflect current dollar values and index it to inflation.
