Rather than wade into the murky waters of trying to control what guns private citizens can own, limit the amount of ammunition a private citizen can own and where and how ammunition can be purchased. If ammunition is limited to, say, a total of 20 rounds of any caliber, regardless of how many guns are owned, it pretty much makes the whole gun control issue go away. Gun owners have their guns and the impact of those guns on society at large is limited by the number or rounds available to the gun owner.
