The minimum legal average drinking age (MLDA) around the world is 15.9 years. The US's drinking age does not necessarily stop teen drinking, and often increases the probability of underage binge drinking and the likelihood of it occurring in unsafe environments. In many circumstances, it can lead to more health problems and life-threatening situations. 45 states already allow underage drinking under certain circumstances. In 29 states, it is allowed if done on private premises with parental consent, in 25 states if for religious purposes, and in 11 states if for educational purposes. Furthermore, in 47 states, those 18 and older retain the rights and responsibilities of adulthood, yet do not possess all of the rights and responsibilities that they are able to handle.
