The United States has less than 5% of the worlds population but more than 25% of the worlds prisoners. Three strikes and other mandatory sentencing laws "not higher crime rates "are responsible for 800% increase in federal prison populations since the 1970's. Private prisons are for profit prisons that hold over 10% of federal prisoners. The problem is that they spend millions each year lobbying for stricter sentencing laws to increase there profits.In the United States our prisons are 40% over capacity. Sweden on the other hand is closing prisons because of lack of people to put in them. Are we Land of the Free??? More like land of the jailed!!! What happen to America?
