Lower the legal drinking age to 18

Created by W.R. on July 01, 2013

In 1984, the National Minimum Drinking Age Act was passed. After 29 years, it has done little to curb the number of young people consuming alcohol. It has simply driven drinking among 18-20 year olds underground. It has resulted in a culture of dangerous binge drinking since it is seen as a forbidden fruit and has also created a large market for fake ID's. The United States has the highest legal drinking age in the developed world. In most countries, the drinking age is 18, and in many it is even lower. Few other countries have a drinking age this high, they include Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Palau. At 18, Americans are legally allowed to fight and die for their country, vote, drive motor vehicles, get married, buy real estate, and enjoy many other privileges, yet they can't have a drink.
