Barcodes and ISBNs for publishing books are terribly expensive; if you're looking to publish in a single format, you can pay from a hundred to several hundred dollars for a simple ISBN (minus barcode). If you're looking to publish a book in multiple formats, that price automatically skyrockets. That may not seem like much to the average person, but, considering that other countries hand out ISBNs for FREE, it's a huge deal for authors and publishing companies. When you're charging authors and publishing companies high prices to publish a book, that expenditure is automatically transferred to consumers. We need an educated public, so please make ISBNs free, so we can nurture a better society.
