Lower the voting age to 16

Created by L.B. on February 02, 2013

I propose that President Obama support a Constitutional Amendment lowering the voting age to 16. Most 16-year-olds can already drive, work, pay taxes, and be charged as adults for crimes. They should be given the right to have a say in the government.

Lowering the voting age may increase voter turnout in the long run, as voting has been shown to be a habit that needs to be developed. At 18, the lives of many young adults are extremely hectic, with the possibility of college or a full time job at one's doorstep. At 16, however, life isn't quite as frantic. Voting may even be incorporated into civics classes, giving the youth of today a greater sense of civic responsibility.
