The adoption tax credit was made permanent when the bill to avoid the fiscal cliff was signed on January 2, 2013.
Unfortunately, the tax credit is nonrefundable starting with tax year 2012. This means that unlike the refundable tax credit in 2010 and 2011, families will only benefit if they have tax liability. No refund will be given regardless of eligible expenses.
Because this tax credit is now nonrefundable, a large number of families who were counting on this credit to ease the financial burden of adoption are left with no tax credit and in some cases no ability to continue with their adoption plans.
Please help make the adoption tax credit refundable again. Signing this petition will hopefully help bring awareness to the impact this nonrefundable status has on so many families.
