Colonoscopies are "free" for screening over the age of 50. The procedure is no different whether it is screening or diagnostic. The other issue is if you are over 50 and you come in for your "free" colonoscopy and the doctor does a biopsy to remove a polyp, it is no longer a "free" colonoscopy as it is now considered diagnostic and covered under the medical portion of your insurance contract not your preventative benefits. Also, what about the patients under the age of 50 who have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, or a personal history of colon polyps, these are also not considered part of your preventative benefits. Way too many if's, ands' or buts, and the only one that ends up paying for it is the patient's as this can be very costly.
