The listed price of goods in the US excludes the taxes a consumer has to pay on top of the advertised price.
This is misleading to consumers who, having gone to buy a product or service (for example a hotel room), will be faced with any number of unknown taxes, fees and charges in addition to the price they expect to pay.
It hardly seems fair that the consumer should keep track of all the applicable taxes that they will encounter whilst buying products in their daily lives. The US tax system, which differs by state, is far too complex to expect an average consumer to memorize and apply whilst shopping.
This system of not listing the value the consumer actually pays at the register is almost unique amongst developed nations and should be fixed.
