The 2nd Amendment of the Constitution of the United States gave citizens the right to bear arms so that a well-armed volunteer militia would exist in the event of a military emergency. "Arms" at that time meant muskets.
The rights for civilians to bear arms in the forms of handguns, rifles and shotguns (in keeping with the 2nd Amendment) should certainly be protected. But military style assault weapons and large capacity ammunition clips, by design, fall into the category of "weapons of mass destruction."
Make assault weapons and their ammunition illegal. Make owning them a punishable Federal offense. Institute a buy-back program. Get these killing machines out the hands of civilians. Hold manufacturers accountable. Follow the lead of the rest of the civilized world on gun control.
