Make College More Affordable by Increasing the Maximum Interest That Can Be Deducted

Created by J.M. on January 22, 2016

There is one simple and easy step to help college affordability. Increase interest deductions on student loans. My wife and I currently pay over $8,000 in interest annually on college debt. Unfortunately, only $2,500 of that expense can be deducted on taxes. The choice of higher education is making less and less economic sense in the long run. We should incentive education much like interest deductions on home ownership. Currently, there is a bill HR 509 introduced by Rep. Charlie Rangel that would increase student loan deductions to $10,000 for a couple filing jointly. Please provide your support for this bill and include it in any tax reform legislation you negotiate with Congress. https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr509#
