Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally, e.g. through the introduction of a gene from a different organism. More than 60 percent of all processed foods on U.S. supermarket shelves—including pizza, chips, cookies, ice cream, salad dressing, corn syrup, and baking powder—contain ingredients from engineered soybeans, corn, or canola. Genetically modified soybeans and corn have been genetically engineered to express agriculturally-desirable traits, including resistance to pests and to herbicides. So stronger and more harmful herbicides need to be used when it comes to controlling these plant, causing harm to humans due to the highly dangerous chemicals.
