In the United States, 1 in 5 women experience sexual assault or battery. On college campuses, that rate changes to 1 in 3 women. 44% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 18.
However, many schools do not teach about rape in a useful way. During some units on rape, students are simply given the list of scary statistics & a few "safety tips to prevent rape." Nor does rape culture and the damage it does to victims appear in many curricula.
Clearly, trying to teach women "Don't get raped" isn't working. Instead, we need to teach EVERYONE "Don't rape." What is needed is clear curriculum explaining that enthusiastic consent is the only acceptable form of consent, & information on resources for victims. Education on rape needs to focus more on prevention & recovery.
