According to RAINN, 1 in 6 women in the US have been raped or have experienced an attempted rape, and 1 in 33 men. Victims are 6 times more likely to develop PTSD, 3 times more likely to have depression, 4 times more likely to consider suicide, and are at higher risks for drug and alcohol abuse.
According to the CDC, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men experience dating violence, and often first experience it between the ages of 11 and 17.
Yet we live in a society where jokes like 'no means yes!' are made on a regular basis, and sex ed units on rape often only give scary statistics and a brief coverage of the laws.
What is done now clearly is not working. We need to break this trend and teach our nation's children the importance of a clear and enthusiastic YES to fight rape culture.
