In December 2014, 17-year-old transgender Ohio teen Leelah Alcorn committed suicide after being subjected to conversion therapy by her intolerant parents. At present, conversion therapy is only illegal in California and New Jersey. The American Psychiatric Association has condemned "psychiatric treatment, such as reparative or conversion therapy, which is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her sexual homosexual orientation." (from May 2000) The APA has also stated this type of therapy does not work and is pseudo science. Signers of this petition believe that when this type of "treatment" is forced upon minors it is tantamount to child abuse & it should be illegal in all 50 states.
