The Obama Administration should promote the U.S. government's adoption of the crayfish as the national crustacean.
The United States has many symbols: a national bird, the bald eagle; a national tree, the oak; and even the phryrigian cap, a "national hat" of sorts. There is currently no such official "national crustacean."
While crawfish are traditionally celebrated in the southern U.S. crayfish are found all over the U.S., and all states house various species of crayfish, unlike crabs, which are most commonly found in border states. As the national crustacean, the crayfish would be a symbol representative of all states.
Four species of crayfish in the U.S. are currently endangered; listing the crayfish as the national crustacean would promote efforts to protect these species.
