In the 1980s, Canada implemented mandatory daytime running lights on all vehicles, and even required that all existing vehicles be retrofitted to comply (which cost less than $100 on average).
The United States National Highway Safety Administration concluded in 2004 that mandatory daytime running lights can reduce fatal crashes up to 23%.
Every car manufactured since the 1980s which is sold in both the US and Canada has had this capability, although many vehicles actually have it disabled when sold in the US.
There is no rational reason for this situation to occur - hundreds of unnecessary deaths are occurring in the US every year that could be avoided by mandating daytime running lights.
Please join me in insisting that this policy be implemented immediately.
