In a monumental and historic moment for the Standing Rock Sioux tribe,indigenous people and environmental activists, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it would deny Energy Transfer an easement it needs for the $3.8 billion project for an oil pipeline planned to intrude upon sacred land. The agency called for a full environmental review and re-evaluation of whether the pipeline’s route should be altered. This is the direct result of brave, courageous, peaceful, non-violent protests over the course of several months and represents a historic achievement in indigenous civil rights history. It is therefore deserving that this day be declared a National Holiday in recognition of these bold pursuits and to ensure that future administrations appreciate and respect this precedent set.
