The US, really all of the UN, puts up with China's skewed ethical behavior on the topic of human rights as an economic and political necessity. Despite this, the treatment of the annexed people of Tibet is unacceptable. Non violent protests have been met with nothing but increased military "security" measures. As a country, the United States steps in to protect those who have been oppressed. Allowing China to continue this behavior will only teach them that such behavior is acceptable in the eyes of the international community. This is apparent from their aggressive reactions to a foreign leader having the audacity to speak to His Holiness the Dalia Lama. Enough is enough.
