Six years ago on Easter I was able to visit the memorial to the Hiroshima bombing. During my visit I was able to speak with some of the survivors of that bombing. Many of these survivors are getting up in age, though one 82-year-old boasted he still took a 50-minute walk every day.
As my father was (after WWII) involved in the nuclear arms industry, the experience was cathartic to both sides. I learned that any time there's a nuclear bomb test anywhere in the world, the mayor of Hiroshima pens that nation a letter in protest.
Tour guides in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki pointed out that no American president has visited these memorials. They humbly requested that we ask President Obama to please come and visit them. I am doing so now.
