America is lagging behind too many nations - in Math skills.
One of the biggest impediments to student learning in our schools is the weak disciplinary measures we have in place.
In the current scenario, students look upon the disciplinary measures as a HINDRANCE to their classroom misbehavior, and so there is nothing to act as a DETERRENT to their chronic classroom chatting.
This must change and we must make classroom chatting an offense punishable by school authorities by way of strict detention which should be given when the student receives the second warning.
The punishment should be STRONG enough to convince the student to change his/her behavior immediately.
Without such a deterrent in place, our educators have no choice but to cover up poor math/language skills with good grades.
