The motto "E Pluribus Unum" - a Latin phrase meaning "Out of many, one" - is found on the Great Seal of the United States and many other official seals including the President, Congress, and Supreme Court. The phrase was officially adopted by an act of congress in 1782 for the Great Seal, and appears on US coins starting in 1786 through today. It is widely considered the motto of the United States, but was never officially recognized by law.
Amidst widespread fear of communism in the 1950s - McCarthyism and the Red Scare - Congress added "under God" to the national anthem in 1955 and passed legislation in 1956 making "In God we trust" the national motto.
