At Michigan State University, in years past, students were allowed three cost-free visits per academic year to the university counseling center. Starting in the fall of 2012, the university no longer guaranteed funding for the visits that a student chooses to make to the counseling center.
A visit can be for something as simple as depression issues or a problem at home. Apparent from the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, these services should be easily accessible and complimentary to students. This can hopefully reduce the chance of such horrid events happening in the future.
Clearly the importance of free counseling, not only at Michigan State University, but around the nation as well, needs to be reinforced.
