In many countries around the world, Election Day is either, #1. Held on a weekend, #2. Held over multiple days or #3. A national holiday.
The purpose is to allow as many people as possible to vote. Since our elections are held on Tuesdays when most people work, and many states are cutting back on early voting, an additional solution to voter turnout problems would be to make Election Day a national holiday.
