Make Election Day a Federal Holiday.

There are few rights more sacred to Americans than the right to vote, and no days more important to American democracy than Election Day. Yet every election day, many Americans are kept from the polls by the demands of their jobs or their classes. This situation is particularly egregious since we have so many holidays such as Thanksgiving or New Year's which, though wonderful, do not serve the immediate practical purpose of Election Day. If we are truly committed to full participation in our democracy, then we ought to set aside Election Day so that all our fellow citizens can put aside their everyday obligations and take the time to reflect and to travel to the polls. We therefore propose that Election Day be made a Federal holiday, with all efforts made to encourage civic spirit that day
