As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Selma march – the confrontation that spurred passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 – were are reminded again that the right to vote is sacred. All Americans can agree that civic participation is good for our democracy.
That’s why it is time to adopt Election Day as a national holiday, to increase turnout. This can be achieved without disruption by moving Veterans Day – which typically falls around election Tuesday – to create Veterans & Voting Day.
Let’s honor the sacrifice of the Selma marchers and the sacrifice of every American soldier who protects our freedom to vote by making voting day an American holiday.
