Make Election Day a National Holiday

Created by J.P. on March 23, 2016

Petition the government to make the day of the U.S. Presidential Election, starting with this election day, November 8, 2016, a national holiday. Long lines at polling stations seen in the 2008 and 2012 elections are an injustice, on a day when Americans exercise their most important civic duty. It is cruel and unjust to force working Americans to accommodate voting into their work schedule and to not allow them the comfort to vote free of pressure. Austria, Belgium, Finland, Switzerland and Spain acknowledge the day's importance and put election day on a weekend. Let's facilitate voting and engagement in the political process, and not relegate it to something done only when it's convenient.
