Election Day is a day set aside by law for the general elections of our public officials, normally occurring on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. While Election Day is a civic holiday in some states and some other states allow for workers to take short periods of time to vote without loss of pay, there are still many states where workers are not allowed time off to vote or where time spent voting is cut from worker pay.
With voting location wait times often extremely long in some states, merely granting a couple of hours to workers is not enough anymore. A national Election Day holiday would not only give workers time to vote, it would also give them time to volunteer at the polls and to assist elderly and disabled citizens, including many veterans, with voting.
