Despite an increase of over 8 million citizens in the eligible population, turnout declined from 131 million voters in 2008 to an estimated 126 million voters in 2012. Some 93 million eligible citizens did NOT vote.
Additionally, voting costs in both time and money, and the least well off are least able to afford such costs. In the past election, the voting waiting time for a county in Florida is reported to be 9 HOURS. A study shows that voter turnout by census tract declines as poverty rates increase for all age groups. The most dramatic decrease occurs as poverty rates increase from 0 to 40%.
Isn't a fair democracy - where the most unfortunate among us have access and opportunities to contribute in addressing their societal grievances - a worthy goal?
