Currently the United States lacks an official language. Many political figures, past and present, have acknowledged the need for fluency in English in order to lead a prosperous life in this country, yet we still allow immigrants into the country without even a loose grasp on the language. This leads to regions that speak foreign languages almost exclusively and prevents true unification with the English speaking population. President Theodore Roosevelt once said “We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house.” If immigrants are not required to learn English, what hope do they have of ever becoming a true American citizen?
