There are many people, approximately 21% of Americans, who speak a different language in their own homes. Of those people, 22.4% speak little to no English. So it's certainly safe to say that the majority of Americans speak English. I think it's great that the United States is a melting pot of different cultures and languages, but to get by in every day life it is almost imperative that you speak English. There can still be a unique mixture of races and cultures, but with a United language that makes those different cultures easier to bring together. Everyone that lives in America or comes to it should have to speak English, along with any other language they prefer. It just makes sense.
