The governments of the United States at the federal level alone, not including state levels and below spent $126.2 million in 2012 catering to people who in many cases refuse to become fluent in English which, as mentioned in the petition, is spoken by 82.1% of the American public. Currently federal documents are produced in 24 different languages by the Government Printing Office. Lack of an official language is not only affecting federal budgets very adversely, but is a large reason why many public school districts lack funds. Also all businesses especially healthcare are affected by this issue if they want to remain competitive and succeed and just conform to federal laws. Many countries today require fluency to immigrate there lawfully. Why is this not so in the United States?
