Your religious beliefs are protected but not your political ideology. Being fired for your political beliefs is still discrimination. After the president's reelection, a Las Vegas company laid off 22 employees, claiming it couldn't bear the burden of Obama's health care law. A UT employer also laid off two workers because of the law, the boss claims that he chose the unfortunate souls because they voted for the guy responsible for it. Most employee's in the US are "at will" which means they can be fired for any reason, as long as it's not a specifically prohibited one, i.e: race, color, religion, sex or national origin are unlawful reasons, and only in five states: CA, NY, CT, CO and MS; are employers forbidden from firing workers for their political beliefs.
