We are petitioning the White House to take a stand on the historical negative and racial connotation of blackface. The goal of this petition is to educate ill-informed individuals about what blackface was perpetrating prior to the Civil Right Movement of the 1960's. Stereotypes embodied in the stock characters of blackface minstrels not only played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist images, attitudes, and perceptions worldwide but also demonized people of African descent. The goal of this petition is to send a strong message to social media companies such as Instagram to incorporate blackface into their “Terms of Use” under the hateful clause. We ask that the White House make a statement for Instagram to acknowledge Kylie Jenner's blackface picture as hate speech.
