"The Star Spangled Banner" has been our nation's National Anthem since 1931, and had been informally used prior to that date. However, it is extremely difficult to sing, leading to a number of embarrassing moments for performers in the moments prior to major sporting events. Furthermore, the lyrics suggest that we are a warlike people. "Freebird," Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1973 ballad, would be a more appropriate anthem. It is more in line with the free spirit of the American people. It is a peaceful song as well. Finally, in this day and age of partisan and regional division, it would serve as a song of national reconciliation, bearing in mind that its authors hailed from the Southern United States. We hereby request that the President present legislation to change the National Anthem.
