The Obama Administration has made investments in High Speed passenger rail; but in order for these investments to catalyze a change to transportation free from crude oil, providing more funding for smarter projects will be necessary.
Many of the projects that have been funded have been for projects that will result in half-fast passenger trains that run on privately owned freight rail tracks. Only electrified trains running on dedicated tracks can achieve top speeds of 220 mph, and speeds like that are the only way that rail transportation will be able to compete for travel market share, and stand on its own financially.
