The lack of gun ownership in the US has made us lax. If a terrorist were to jump out of nowhere, or a burglar raid a house, or even a convenience store stick-up occur, what would we do? We piss our pants and run as far as a bullet can reach us. If we were to make firearm ownership and carrying mandatory, our crime rates would drop like no other (except the countries that already did it.) For more incentive, look no further than the constitution. "The right to bear arms" is exactly what i'm talking about here. Protect our civil rights and our personal protection.
